An Overview on Diagnosis and Treatment of Lattice Degeneration

Lattice Degeneration
At windy city retina, Dr. Ankit Desai is providing diagnosis and treatment for the full range of diseases of the retina, macula, and vitreous. Lattice degeneration is one of the most common retinal conditions that we encounter at the retina center. Lattice degeneration is an eye disorder that affects approximately 10 percent of the American population.

There is majority of people suffering from the condition and are not aware that they are affected because it does not show symptoms. However, in cases where lattice degeneration causes symptoms, the diagnosis is performed by a retina specialist immediately. Once Dr. Ankit Desai diagnoses the lattice degeneration at the retina center, he can determine whether this eye condition requires treatment or not. It has been noticed that in some cases, the lattice degeneration can lead to retinal problems, such as a retinal tear. Patients living with retinal tears may require treatment to help prevent retinal detachment and permanent loss of vision.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with lattice degeneration, we highly recommend that you book an appointment at the retina center immediately.

What Is Lattice Degeneration?

Lattice degeneration is a type of eye condition where the peripheral retina responsible for a person’s lateral vision becomes weak and thin. It may happen in one eye or both eyes.

It happens most often in people who are short-sighted and have a tendency to run into families. The cause of Lattice degeneration is unknown. In most cases, lattice degeneration does not impair vision and does not seriously threaten eye health. Although people with retinal degeneration have a higher risk of developing retinal detachment than those without it, their risk remains relatively low at approximately 1%.

What Are the Symptoms of Lattice Degeneration?

In general, lattice degeneration does not produce any symptoms, which explains why most people with these eye disorders do not know they have lattice degeneration.

Unfortunately, people who experience symptoms associated with their lattice degeneration have already experienced at least some complications because of the condition, most often retinal holes or tears.

At this point, the most common symptoms include:

The sudden appearance of new floaters, usually in a cluster

Frequent flashes of light

Loss of side vision

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, then it is good to go for the dilated eye exam. Even if holes are recognized, it is not necessary to go for immediate treatment. Observation may be advised in a short tenure. If the treatment is recommended, then the goal will be to seal the lattice degeneration and retinal holes using laser surgery. This procedure is helpful to reduce the risk of retinal detachment.
