Advice on Diagnosis and Treatment of Inherited Retinal Disorders

Inherited retinal diseases are types of diseases that are very rare caused by a genetic mutation. Due to inherited retinal diseases, the loss of vision over time and in many cases leads to complete blindness.

Thanks to doctors Ankit Desai, who retina subspecialists and board-certified ophthalmologists. He provides diagnosis and treatment for retinal conditions.

Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)

Photoreceptors are rods and cones inside your eyes that are responsible for sensing light. Retinitis can take place when those rods and cones begin to deteriorate.

Nyctalopia or night blindness accounted for the first warning sign. At some point, those affected by retinitis pigmentosa will develop tunnel vision, losing most of their side vision. Finally, this disease results in total blindness.

Cone-Rod Dystrophy

It is a childhood disease that can affect the cone photoreceptors first, then the rods. This type of eye condition is unique as compared to other IRDs. People who are suffering from cone-rod dystrophy can usually lose central and color vision in the beginning. Afterward, the condition of progressive loss of peripheral vision comes into existence.

When it comes to slow down the progressive process, then there is currently a treatment option. However, at present, there is no cure for this eye condition.

Leber congenital Amaurosis

Leber congenital Amaurosis becomes evident in infancy or early childhood, and mutation in over 19 genes is the cause. LCA can lead to severe vision impairment in infancy, leading to childhood sightlessness. Clinical trials are being conducted to improve the vision of those affected by LCA. Gene replacement therapy has proved beneficial and guarantees of promising results.

Choroideremia

Due to the result of the choroid and retinal cell degeneration these eye conditions take place. Night blindness, tunnel vision, and central vision loss are the result due to the linkage of the X chromosome. The number of males affected by this disease is more. Gene replacement therapy is helpful for the treatment of this condition.

Juvenile Macular Degeneration (JMD)

Adult-onset macular degeneration typically occurs in the patient over 60. but the condition of Juvenile macular degeneration develops much sooner. Straight grid disease is the most common form of JMD; symptoms begin to surface during the childhood or teen years. Some versions of the disorder may respond to laser therapy irrespective of no cure for JMD.

Diagnose Inherited Retinal Diseases

Like most other medical conditions, timely diagnosis is essential when managing inherited retinal disorders.

Suspected conditions on basis of which the diagnostic tests may include:

Visual field testing

Fundus autofluorescence

Fundus photography

Color vision testing

Fluorescein angiography

Dark adaptometry

Electroretinogram

Indocyanine green angiography

Electroculogram

It is deemed necessary, we may recommend genetic testing to identify the gene responsible for your condition.
