Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) may be defined as an eye disorder that can blur the sharp, central vision you need for activities like reading and driving. “Age-related” as the name describe itself is  a kind of macula disorder that often happens in older people.

Causes:

If we talk about the exact cause of Age-related macular degeneration then it is not known, but it has been linked to a number of risk factors if not treated timely. These contain having excess weight and high blood pressure, smoking, and having a family history of the condition

Can you stop the progression of macular degeneration?

You may have difficulty seeing clearly in the late stages. Your eye doctors may advise surgery, or you may consider working with an occupational therapist. On average, it takes about 10 years to move from diagnosis to legal impaired vision, but there are some forms of macular degeneration that can cause vision loss in just days.

Do you always go blind with macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration only causes blurred or reduce central vision due to the thinning of macula that is the part of retina responsible for clear vision in your direct line of sight. In this way your peripheral vision will remain intact and clearly means that you will not go completely blind. But it is also considerable fact that if your macular degeneration gets acutely worse, you will surely fall under the 'legally blind' category.

What is the best treatment for macular degeneration?

Currently the anti-VEGF therapy is the most common and effective clinical treatment for wet Age-related Macular Degeneration.
